Admired,
and still mysterious, the fantastic biodiversity of the Amazon
wakes up the interests of the entire world scientific community.
In which way can the flora and fauna of the amazon help to
cure diseases, to create new productive processes or, still,
to develop revolutionary substances for different applications?
These and many other answers will come through CBA - Center
of Biotechnology of the Amazon.
An initiative from the Brazilian Government
, in partnership with the scientific community and the private
sector, the Center of Biotechnology of the Amazon has as main
goal to develop new technologies starting from integrated
researches, that will be performed by a net of regional and
national laboratories.
This way, CBA will be capable to offer support to the companies
of transformation and industrialization of natural products
in its most different applications: from pharmaceutical products,
cosmetics and bio insecticide to agriculture, to the food
industry, coloring, perfuming, essential oils, among others.
The work of the Center of Biotechnology of
the Amazon is also going to facilitate, the creation of insertion
mechanisms of the traditional populations of the Amazon in
the regional economy, the sustained use of its potentialities,
the growth of companies already existent, the attraction of
new investments for the sector of natural resources in the
Amazon area and the training of appropriately qualified human
resources.

CBA
- PHYSICAL AND LABORATORY STRUCTURE AMONG THE MOST COMPLETE
AND WELL EQUIPPED IN THE WORLD
 Built
with resources from the Superintendency of the Manaus
Free Trade Zone, the federal government's organ linked
to the Ministry for Industry Development and External
Trade, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment,
the Center of Biotechnology of the Amazon is located in
the Industrial District of Manaus. There are 12 thousand
m2 of built area where there is a complex with 26 laboratories,
central of production of extracts, facilities for incubation
of companies, lodgings for researchers and administrative
and research support facilities.
CBA is constituted of:

AVERAGE
AND LONG RANGE ACTIONS: GUARANTEE
OF WORLD CONSOLIDATION OF THE CENTER OF BIOTECHNOLOGY OF THE
AMAZON
In the first phase, the
Center of Biotechnology of Amazon will prio-ritize the work
in the phytotherapeutic areas, cosmetics, extracts and sectors
in wide evolution and great participation in the national
economy.
The areas of science,
technology and technological innovation will also be prioritized,
seeking to increase the competitiveness of the bio products
and agricultural products produced in the Amazon, assuring
development of techniques that influence the productivity
and the quality of those products directly to the internal
market and the demanding international market.
Besides these objectives,
the Center of Biotechnology of the Amazon will have to make
available, or to consolidate competencies in areas of great
relevance to the bio technical development, as, for example,
in the sector of name brands and patents; in the administration
and transfer of technologies and in the information on natural
and bio technical products and its markets.
In another sector, the
Center of Biotechnology intends to develop and potentialize
what already exists in the country in terms of bio prospecting.
Among them there are pharmaceutical products, for example,
the antibiotics, drugs anti-neoplastic, anti-hipertensive,
neurological-active substances and immune-modulators, besides
materials for cosmetics, natural hair coloring, perfume, essential
oils, polymeric biodegradable, bio insecticide and enzymes
of bio technical interest, among others.

A
CENTER OF NATIONAL INTEGRATION
The Center of Biotechnology of the
Amazon will be linked to the most important laboratories and groups
of national research in a permanent process of discovery of new
substances of socioeconomic interest.
Regionally, this partnership will
be with the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), National Institute
of Researches of the Amazon (INPA), Foundation Center of Analyses,
Research and Technological Innovations (FUCAPI), Brazilian Company
of Agricultural Research of the Western Amazon and Amapá,
Foundation of Tropical Medicine of Manaus (FMT), FIOCRUZ, Federal
University of Pará and Emílio Goeldi Museum, among
others.
Nationally involved in the
process are: the University of São Paulo, Embrapa/CENARGEN,
State University of São Paulo (UNESP), Federal University
of Rio Grande do Sul, Federal University of Ceará, Federal
University of Pelotas, Federal University of São Carlos,
Federal University of Vicosa, State University of Londrina, Federal
University of Rio de Janeiro, Federal University of Pernambuco,
Federal University of Alagoas, Federal University of Santa Catarina,
University of Ribeirão Preto, University of Campinas, University
of Brasília, Instituto Butantã, Fundação
Oswaldo Cruz, Institute of Biotechnology of Caxias do Sul, National
Laboratory of Luz Síncroton and other teaching and research
centers.
